Nara. The first capital of Japan.
The history of Nara is long and rich. In 710, the capital of Japan was moved from Asuka to Nara, and the city was renamed Heijokyo. Nara was a major center of Buddhism during this period, and many important temples and shrines were built.
In 794, the capital was moved to Kyoto. In 1998, Nara was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
